Different Weight Formulas

Devine Formula (1974)

Created by Dr. B.J. Devine, this formula is the oldest and is quite conservative. It was based on life insurance data and is still widely used. Men start at 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet; women at 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet.

Robinson Formula (1983)

Developed 9 years after Devine, this formula is popular for athletes. It tends to give slightly higher weight recommendations. Men: 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch; women: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet.

Miller & Hamwi Formulas

Miller (1983) and Hamwi (1964) formulas tend to give more realistic modern weight targets, often between Devine and Robinson. Many experts consider these more applicable to today's population than the older Devine formula. They account for changing body compositions and fitness standards.
